The Vail Daily is integral to the community serving the local news and information needs, helping local businesses grow and supporting local organization doing good work.  We are looking for a publisher who will build on a solid foundation and lead the Vail Daily into the future by retaining and building a strong team and developing and executing plans to grow audience, revenue and the bottom line.

Position Summary:                        

The Vail Daily seeks a progressive business and community leader as Publisher.   This individual will be experienced in innovating new products and systems while executing content, sales and marketing plans.  The Vail Daily publisher will have a vision for the future and executes to the utmost accountability. The ideal candidate is passionate about working as a team to grow audience and revenue while ensuring editorial independence. Our publisher will retain and build a high-quality staff while fostering office teamwork and camaraderie. The publisher is experienced in print, magazine and digital media channels and embraces the rapidly evolving media industry. The role requires a leader with strong communication and organizational skills.  The publisher seeks ways to build the audience, revenue and profitability of each product and the enterprise.  The publisher understands that financial matters, including revenue generation, billing, revenue collections, and profitability are the foundation on which our strategic goals and values are built. The publisher is passionate about the mission of community journalism delivered across multiple channels.  The ideal candidate relishes being an integral part of the community building strong relationships with key senior business, government and non-profit people and organizations

As publisher your general responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Collaborate with the Swift Regional publisher and peers to identify, develop and execute initiatives in the areas of content, advertising sales and new product development and distribution
  • Be a role model for your team by setting and living high expectations for quality work and establishing an environment where every team member reaches their full potential.
  • Champion audience targeted journalism that exceeds the expectations of the community.
  • Monitor the revenue pipeline adjusting as necessary to create sustainable growth.
  • Stay well-connected with customers to ensure broad market needs are being incorporated into current and future product development.
  • Collaborate with local team and finance on pricing strategies and execution to achieve revenue and profitability goals.
  • Participate in contract negotiations for major clients, when needed. 
  • Identify and resolve opportunities and issues across the editorial, sales, production and distribution functions.
  • Get involved and be the primary liaison in the community across business, government and non-profit organizations
  • Lead the team in planning short- and long-term strategies to achieve goals and objectives including annual business plans, market analysis, content strategies and employee/team development.
  • Follow established policies and procedures in support of the company’s core values.
  • A dynamic, energetic, and positive approach that equates to constantly striving to improvement and be the best.

Experience / Qualifications:

  • 10+ years in diversified leadership roles, driving and implementing audience and revenue growth.
  • Proven track record of growing revenue through new product development, marketing, branding, and partnerships.
  • Proven experience crafting and executing business strategy.
  • Significant general management and P&L experience revenue development, cost management and new product creation.
  • History of decision-making based on business metrics.
  • Mastery of digital audience, revenue and marketing and advertising programs in addition to traditional and legacy print-based programs.
  • Inspirational leadership style and hands-on approach.
  • Proven experience to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment that demands flexibility with schedule, hours and days worked.
  • Demonstrated ability to connect with all members of the staff as well as all facets of the community.
  • Strong experience with CRM and other technical tools.
