Description:

The Gallup Sun, a weekly newspaper, released on Fridays, is looking for a dedicated part-time editorial assistant to work Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, with some availability on other days (telecommuting OK). Duties include posting on the Sun’s website and social media, editing reporters’ stories, copyediting layout, formatting/editing guest submissions and press releases, writing briefs and articles and  posting breaking news to web and/or social media.

A great position for the freelance journalist/editor looking for long-term, consistent work. Please do not apply if you're looking for something to hold you over until your next job. The position requires about 4-6 weeks of training, so those looking for steady part-time work need only apply.

Requirements

- Prefer candidate with a BA degree in journalism, communications, English or any other degree w/commensurate daily or weekly newspaper experience

- Newspaper writing experience utilizing Associated Stylebook is a must

- Ability to read articles with scrutiny, checking for facts, consistency, flow, spelling, and syntax

- AP Stylebook savvy - must own and know how to use one

- Internet/social media literate

- Must own phone and computer w/high speed Internet, Microsoft Office, and Adobe Acrobat

- Excellent communication skills and follow through.
