Description:

High-Profile Energy Beat Needs Seasoned Multimedia Reporter

Cowboy State Daily, one of the Rocky Mountain region's largest news organizations, is searching for a tenacious reporter to cover energy in Wyoming — a state at the bullseye of the national energy debate.

How the state’s legacy coal, oil, natural gas, uranium and trona industries adapt as the national and global energy conversation shifts to wind, solar and other green technologies matters to Wyoming residents and impacts every sector of the state’s economy.

We are searching for a seasoned reporter who can report accurately and objectively with perspectives and sources from all sides of energy issues.

You will be paid well with excellent benefits and an enviable bonus package that includes no-cost health coverage.

This is a premiere energy reporting beat with a national audience. We are losing our current energy reporter to a top 3 market.

The successful candidate will be experienced in reporting on energy in the West and will cultivate credible sources; expected to turn around clean copy in real time, work well under pressure and enjoy traveling around the state.

Plus, you should be comfortable on camera. We have a burgeoning video operation. In fact, we produce more statewide video news than any of the television stations in the state.

Most importantly, you will tell the stories of real people to communicate the honest emotion behind the headlines.

We’re a bunch of talented, experienced journalists who thought Wyoming was being underserved, and we knew we could do it better. We’re passionate about telling Wyoming’s stories and we have a blast doing it.

We’re, by far, the most-read news organization in the state. Plus, as measured by unique visits, we’re larger than any media organization in most surrounding states including: Montana, Idaho, Nebraska, and South Dakota.

We are independently owned, will never be acquired by a hedge fund, and will never be part of a chain.

You will:

  • Stay on top of the news in your beat; know how to sniff it out.
  • Develop trustworthy sources in your area.
  • Produce consistent, high-quality copy and know how to meet deadlines.
  • Work with others. We have reporters all over the state, and we all help each other out.
  • Come to daily budget meetings loaded with story ideas.
  • Do video reports every day to complement your stories.
  • Take photos and video to present your stories in compelling, interesting ways.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least five years of journalism experience
  • Outgoing, great communicator

  • Able to work independently

  • Must possess excellent writing skills and knowledge of AP Style

Benefits:

  • Best health care plan in the state. Nothing comes out of your pocket.
  • 401(k) with up to 4% match
  • Three weeks of vacation
  • Cellphone reimbursement
  • Monthly bonus plan
