Description:

Senior Reporter

Do you have an insatiable curiosity? Do you like being the person in the room who knows the inside story? Can you find the exciting news hook from an otherwise routine meeting?
If those statements fit you to a tee, the Hobbs News-Sun wants you.
The News-Sun, a five-day-a-week newspaper located in breathtaking Lea County in southeast New Mexico minutes away from the Texas state line, is seeking a top-notch Senior Reporter to fill the number two position in our newsroom. Our next Senior Reporter will need to wear multiple hats, from interviewing, researching and writing stories to layout and design to coaching and mentoring young reporters.
While the primary role of the Senior Reporter is just what it says, reporting, the position also entails photography and some managerial duties. Proficiency with the Adobe suite of software, including InDesign and Photoshop, are necessary. Spanish language skills would be a plus, but are not required.
This is a salaried position, with salary commensurate with experience. The Senior Reporter should have 3-5 years experience with a Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Management or supervisory experience is a plus.
The News-Sun places high value on journalistic integrity and transparency. The ability to multi-task, juggling numerous assignments and story lines at the same time, is also essential. And being able to thrive under pressure wouldn’t hurt.
The News-Sun is a family-owned newspaper that loves to promote from within. The last two editors started in the newsroom and worked their way up to the editor’s desk.
This is not a remote position. Applicants should live in the area or be willing to relocate.
To apply, please send a resume outlining your relevant experience, a cover letter telling us why you’d be perfect for the position and links to three examples of your best work to date. Please forward via email to Editor Andy Brosig, at editor@hobbsnews.com.
