Job Summary:

This is an integral position to Denver Gazette’s news operation. This person wears multiple hats. The position has responsibility for booking and proofing the Denver Gazette e-edition; editing articles; curating and selecting stories, including wire copy; and, working with other editors and staffers to pursue stories such as breaking new and other assignments. This position entails working nights and weekends, directing news coverage as necessary. Currently, the work schedule is Sunday through Thursday, 3-11 pm (with the possibility of change in the future).

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

·        Job performance must remain focused on upholding the company’s core values, including a commitment to objective and accountability journalism.

·        Pursue balanced news content, as well as fairness, timeliness, thoroughness, and accuracy of news coverage.

·        Work with Denver Editor, Deputy Editor, City Editor, Sports Editor, Digital Editor, the Audience Team and staffers to accomplish the mission of the newspaper.

·        Stay abreast of major news developments at the local, state, and national level. Encourage stories that present a local perspective on the issues.

·        Book the Denver Gazette e-edition.

·        Serve as the News Editor, working nights and weekends, as assigned.

·        Proof the e-edition, including serving as a slot editor, as assigned.

·        Work with the universal desk on editing stories.

·        Work with the Sports department on editing sport stories.

·        Perform other duties as required.

The News Editor’s work schedule will include nights and weekends.    

Minimum Education & Work Experience Requirements: 

·        Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English or related field. 

·        At least 5 years editing experience.

·        Proficiency in editing and assigning.

·        Booking experience preferred.

·        Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively.

·        Newsroom management experience is a plus. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required: 

·        Ability to work with all types and act as a liaison between departments.

·        Must be able to communicate clearly and deal effectively/politely with the staff, colleagues, contractors, general public.

·        Excellent problem-solving ability and decision-making skills.

·        Ability to analyze and interpret complex documents.

·        Respond effectively to sensitive inquiries/complaints.

·        Ability to communicate persuasively with newsroom staff.

·        Works well under pressure and with deadlines.

·        Must have strong journalism ethics.

·        Must be organized and detail oriented.

·        Excellent computer and internet skills.

·        Ability to use text editing programs including Microsoft Office.
