Description:

PublicSource.org is seeking a higher education reporter to join our team in covering one of the most critical beats in the Pittsburgh region. This position is part of a partnership with Open Campus, a national nonprofit news organization with a network of local reporters dedicated to covering higher education.

The beat is not solely about holding institutions accountable, but also about examining the critical role that higher ed plays in the life and health of a place, including how it can drive economic opportunity, advance social mobility, increase civic engagement and foster healthy neighborhoods and families.

The Pittsburgh region is home to a rich tapestry of colleges and universities. Given that most Americans attend college close to home, the performance of local colleges is a vital issue. Independent journalism can shed light on how well these institutions serve their communities, helping citizens make informed decisions about education and career paths.

What we're looking for:

  • Someone who will thrive on building relationships with sources to consistently deliver impactful local higher ed news.

  • A journalist who is passionate about local news, connecting with audiences and telling compelling stories in various formats that resonate with the community.

  • A reporter who can manage multiple assignments, ranging from quick-turn stories to in-depth projects, while adhering to deadlines.

  • Someone capable of or interested in developing proficiency in data-driven journalism.

  • A team player dedicated to contributing to our collaborative newsroom, where we emphasize strong visuals and audience engagement.

Salary Range: $50,000-$60,000.

PublicSource has an office in Pittsburgh and operates in a hybrid work environment. We offer paid vacation and sick leave, a 401(k) match, a health plan, competitive paid parental leave, and professional development opportunities.
