Description:

Education Reporter-Rapid City, SD

The Rapid City Journal, the most prominent news organization in western South Dakota and headquartered in a vibrant, growing city with one of the country’s most beautiful backyards, is seeking an ambitious and enterprising reporter to build a beat around schools and education.

This full-time position in our digital-first newsroom will provide opportunities to write daily news, dig deep on policy decisions that impact South Dakota families and children, and explore issues and trends around literacy and learning. We also want to tell engaging stories about teachers and students. We’re looking for reporter who will plug in quickly, invest in relationships, connect readers with what they can’t see themselves, and write with authority.

Rapid City is home to two of the state’s largest high schools, plus South Dakota School of Mines, one of the country’s most renowned engineering schools that will soon celebrate its 140th year. This beat also will include coverage of two K-12 public school districts.

A bustling regional hub nestled in the heart of the Black Hills, Rapid City is the gateway to all things outdoors with five national parks within 90 minutes -- including world-famous Mount Rushmore and the alien-like landscape of the Badlands – plus there’s a lively local arts scene with no shortage of community theater, musical talents, and dynamic galleries. With a population of about 80,000, Rapid City is the Midwest’s fastest-growing community.

An up-and-coming tourist destination, Rapid City and the Black Hills explode with visitors in the summertime, especially during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. When the temperatures drop, the opportunities to explore don’t – with events like the Black Hills PowWow and Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo bringing in thousands to enjoy uniquely South Dakota activities.
