Description:

Summary:

The Mercury News and East Bay Times are looking for an energetic and aggressive journalist who combines strong news judgment and quick decision- making skills with the kind of teaching/coaching approach to editing that turns promising reporters into great ones. You’ll work with reporters and editors on the metro team and across the newsroom — as well as visual journalists and our audience engagement team —to handle the biggest news stories of the day. We'll also look to you to launch deeper enterprise off the news, and guide the team toward interesting stories that aren't staring us in the face. Convince us you are a phenom at making things happen -- and someone who is always looking for answers, rather than explaining why things can’t be done.

Must be located in the South or East Bay Area and work at least three office days weekly in San Jose and/or Concord.

What You'll Do:

  • Manage a team of journalists with varying levels of experience, empowering them to produce impactful content that ranges from quick-turnaround web stories to in-depth features and investigative pieces

  • Provide insightful, constructive editing on tight deadlines, ensuring stories meet our high standards for accuracy, fairness, and compelling storytelling

  • Partner with editors and reporters across departments, including visual journalism and audience engagement, to create a cohesive newsroom strategy and foster a culture of excellence

  • Identify and cultivate enterprise stories that go beyond the surface, uncovering unique angles and providing in-depth analysis that sets our coverage apart

  • Leverage metrics and audience insights to inform coverage decisions, optimize content performance, and guide the team toward continuous improvement

  • Thrive in a fast-paced news environment, demonstrating a "can-do" attitude and a relentless pursuit of answers and solutions

What You'll Bring:

  • 3+ years of journalism and editing experience

  • A keen sense for what makes a story compelling, along with the ability to prioritize and make swift decisions under pressure

  • Excellent planning and project management abilities, ensuring smooth workflows and efficient use of resources

  • A Bachelor's Degree in journalism or a related field that has equipped you with the essential skills for newsroom success

  • A deep interest in the region and its diverse communities, fueling your desire to tell stories that matter

  • Proficiency in a second language relevant to our readership is a valuable asset

Along with your resume, please submit a cover letter.
