Summary:

The Denver Post is seeking a part-time breaking news reporter to work at least one weekend shift and an early morning shift. The successful applicant must be able to juggle multiple assignments and make good decisions about what subjects to tackle first. The ability to source and monitor multiple streams of information -- from police to competitors -- is a must, as is the ability to write quick, clear, accurate and engaging stories and headlines.

What you will do:

  • Develop story ideas in coordination with assignment editor

  • Research, observe surroundings and conduct interviews over the telephone and in person to gather pertinent information for news stories

  • Interact with colleagues in a professional manner

  • Organize information and write an accurate, clear, interesting and grammatically correct story while meeting deadlines

  • Produce stories of varying complexity and form

  • Seek out and report news for immediate publication on the Post’s digital platforms or for print publications

  • Discuss story formulation with editors and edit or rewrite stories, as necessary

  • Use digital tools to report and promote Denver Post material

  • Understand and implement SEO techniques to ensure content reaches largest online audience; stay abreast of latest trends

  • Create and curate content for a dynamic web presence

  • Request appropriate photos and graphics for stories; work closely with visual journalists to provide clear explanations of assignments; shoot photos and videos when necessary and transmit them promptly for digital publication


What you will bring:

  • Reporting, writing and editing skills, including knowledge of AP style

  • Strong news judgment

  • Understanding of SEO and digital production techniques and uses

  • Knowledge of digital storytelling methods

  • Ability to cultivate sources

  • Knowledge of analytics and how to use them in decision making

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field or equivalent experience

  • Basic understanding of standard curation techniques

  • Ability to multi-task and work quickly to meet deadlines

  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required

 

The hourly wage is $20.17 - $35.30. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, MediaNews Group offers a comprehensive benefits package, and 401K plan (all benefits are based on eligibility).
