GENERAL INTRODUCTION:

Each position at the Chancery extends the ministry of the archbishop as outlined in the position description. The archbishop employs suitable, chosen collaborators (clerics, religious, or lay people) to help carry out the mission of the Catholic Church.
 

This role is part of the Northwest Catholic team, which is connected to the Archdiocesan Communications team, focused on evangelization and support of the parishes, schools and other archdiocesan ministries.

 

GENERAL SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL PURPOSE:

Here’s your chance to take your storytelling skills and inspire others to live their faith more deeply, by uncovering the stories of Catholics, parishes, schools, and ministries across Western Washington. We are looking for an experienced writer/editor to join the Northwest Catholic team.

 

This person will contribute to and support the production of Northwest Catholic magazine and NWCatholic.org by researching and writing news and feature stories, editing others’ work, posting local and syndicated stories to the website, maintaining good relationships with sources and the local Catholic community, collaborating with the Communications team and filling in for the editor when needed.

 

 

ESSENTIAL POSITION DUTIES:
 

  1. Writes, edits and proofreads news and feature stories for Northwest Catholic magazine and NWCatholic.org. Obtains photos as necessary.
  2. Generates story ideas for the magazine and website.
  3. Assists in the planning and production of Northwest Catholic magazine.
  4. Assists in the daily production of NWCatholic.org, including collaborating with the social media specialist.
  5. Builds relationships with leaders, clergy, organizations, parishes and volunteers in the archdiocese.
  6. Supports the overall efforts of the Communications team by participating in the planning and execution of other projects as appropriate.
  7. May support editing of other archdiocesan documents as needed.

 

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Primary: 

  1. Willingness and ability to support the mission of the Catholic Church by extending the ministry of the archbishop.
  2. Member of a parish and in good standing with the Catholic Church.
  3. Willingness to conduct all interactions on behalf of the Communications team and Northwest Catholic with respect and charity.
  4. Must be able to pass background check and complete Safe Environment training.

 

Education:

  1. Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or a related field.

 

Experience:

 

  1. Minimum of three years of journalism experience.
  2. Proven experience with reporting, editing and content development.
  3. Experience with online publishing and SEO best practices.

  1. Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects.
  2. Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written.
  3. Team-oriented, flexible, positive outlook and willingness to learn.
  4. Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.
  5. Detail-oriented with a high degree of accuracy.
  6. Proven ability to self-motivate and work both independently and as part of a team.
  7. Demonstrable knowledge of the Catholic Church, history and culture.
  8. Written English/Spanish fluency is a plus.
  9. Maintains a professional appearance and demeanor.
  10.  Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  11.  Photography experience is a plus.
  12.  Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  13.  Knowledge of Google Analytics is a plus.

 

 

 

Any offered salary is determined based on internal equity, internal salary ranges, market data, applicant’s skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications.
