Page designer / copy editor

The Bakersfield Californian seeks a page designer and copy editor to join its team. The position is part of a universal desk, which handles the daily The Bakersfield Californian, weekly Tehachapi News, and other publications, including our popular Bakersfield Life magazine. Responsibilities will include opportunities to design news, features, and sports pages, including A1 design. We also seek an editor adept at wire editing; experience as a slot editor is a plus. 

 

You'll edit stories, and send copy and photos to the web in our digital-first newsroom and design pages for the print editions. This person can be expected to handle any duty given to a journalist, including reporting and writing stories as needed for the daily newspaper and any of The Californian's specialty publications. The person can be called upon to assist with editing our specialty publications and daily Opinion section. 

 

The Bakersfield Californian is an award-winning newspaper, recognized with general excellence awards from the California News Publishers Association four years in a row.

 

Qualifications include:

• Experience in pagination software, especially using Adobe InDesign and InCopy. Experience with Blox is a plus.

• Advanced knowledge of AP style, grammar, and copy editing on deadline.

• Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, or comparable work experience is preferred.

• Experience on a daily newspaper copy desk is preferred.
