Mid-Atlantic Media, a fast-growing publisher of niche community and ethnic titles, is recruiting for a copy editor to join its stable of award-winning journalists.  Primary editing functions will be to act as copy editor under the supervision of editors for the venerable, award-winning Baltimore Jewish Times, Philadelphia Jewish Exponent and Washington Jewish Week.  Familiarity with Jewish community is preferred.  Secondarily, the candidate will have the delightful opportunity to lead, as managing editor, two bi-monthly lifestyle magazines.  Additionally, there will be occasional other editing projects within Mid-Atlantic Media.  

We’re looking for a talented copy/line editor that can work with editors, staff writers, freelance writers and subscription wire services to manage the workflow, and oversee top notch quality content before its published.   A candidate that can work in a "digital first" media environment for our three (3) Jewish weeklies.  A candidate that can work through copious amounts of copy and serve as a mentor to help develop up-and-coming journalistic talent. A candidate that is willing to take on being the lead editor of two bi-monthly lifestyle publications covering Baltimore and Montgomery, Maryland counties. The candidate must have the ability to stay organized while juggling multiple projects, and the willingness to help shape these multiple publications and their online experience. This is a high-energy position and comes with the opportunity to be part of a team that shapes how tens of thousands of readers across the greater Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Washington areas digest community news and features. This is NOT a remote work position.  Occasional evenings, weekends and travel will be expected.

Qualifications:

• Familiarity of Jewish community is preferred
• Minimum 3-to-5 years of community news experience
• An ability to edit quickly and accurately in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
• Strong people skills and an ability to manage and motivate a team of staff and freelance writers
• Digital/Technical aptitude, including comfort with Wordpress, Photoshop, and digital photography and social media.
• Ability and willingness to wear many hats, from high-level editorial strategy down to shoe-leather journalism. 

Responsibilities:

• Copy editor – Regularly check and correct our reporters’ copy for errors, awkward phrasing, verbosity and un-engaging wording. Uphold AP Style and our house style.
• Workflow - Supervise the staff and freelance writers content workflow to assure the publications are meeting deadlines
• Proofing - Oversee magazine and digital media content to assure they are acceptable for publishing.
• Fact checking - Contribute to the fact-checking needed to assure all content, including photography and video are accurate and adhere to copyright laws.
• Problem solver – Diagnose and help to resolve minor technical problems.
