Description:

The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law (Lawyers’ Committee) is seeking a bright, creative, qualified communicator to serve as Communications Coordinator. The person in this position will report directly to the Director of Communications and will work with other staff to help execute the Lawyers’ Committee’s strategic communications plan and expand our national visibility through media relations, digital communications, marketing and internal communication.

  • Assist in the implementation of organization’s strategic plan and development and implementation of strategic communications plan which advance the outreach, communications, and goals of the Lawyers’ Committee
  • Lead and manage organization’s digital functions to ensure that our online program advances fundraising, growth, messaging and campaign priorities; manage social media accounts to foster interaction, education, engagement and discussion regarding the Lawyers’ Committee’s mission and vision to the public and promote the work of the Committee; update our social media accounts to boost our presence in social media through creative strategies on Facebook, Twitter, blogs, and other social media channels
  • Develop and manage Lawyers’ Committee’s external email program, including messaging to key stakeholders, and general advocacy; Assist with fundraising messages
  • Assist with media relations, including developing and maintain high-level media contacts; planning, organizing and pitching of high quality press events; drafting press releases, columns, op-eds, letters to editors, etc. and other communication and marketing collateral that deliver consistent, understandable messages
  • Draft columns, scripts, speeches and testimony
  • Assist with planning and implementation of external affairs, events, and outreach
  • Participate as Lawyers’ Committee’s representative, as needed, in local, regional and coalitional communications efforts
  • Assist with communication to Board, staff and key stakeholders; Launch and manage electronic newsletter and manage internal Board website
  • Assist with video and photography support and coordination
  • Provide general administrative support and coordination for Communications department including managing the department calendar, general scheduling for meetings, etc.

Assist with publication coordination and basic page layout for marketing collateral (i.e., flyers and internal brochures); Work with designers and printers to complete brochures and other materials

  • Other duties as assigned

 

The ideal candidate will have 3-5 years of related work experience, preferably with a nonprofit organization. A Bachelor’s degree is required.  The applicant must be detail oriented, have strong organizational skills, ability to manage multiple projects at one time and prioritize tasks effectively.   Excellent written and verbal communications skills are vital, especially the ability to translate legal issues and concepts for public consumption. Candidates should have expertise in advocacy campaigns, technology management, online fundraising, email communications, list building, content development, social networking, media relations and event planning.  Familiarity with web-based volunteer management, mass communications software and solid proficiency in HTML, CMS, email best practices, and Microsoft Word required.  Familiarity with desktop publishing and graphic design skills are a plus as well as a background in fundraising.  Existing media contacts are also a plus. The ideal candidate will also be a quick-learner with strong initiative and a passion for civil rights.  Applicant must be a team player with the ability to display grace under pressure, outgoing, affable and be able to work under tight deadlines.
