 Southern Nuclear, headquartered in Birmingham, AL, operates Southern Company's six nuclear reactors at three locations in Georgia and Alabama:  two reactors at Plant Vogtle, near Waynesboro, GA; two reactors at Plant Hatch, near Baxley, GA; and two reactors at Plant Farley, near Dothan, AL.  In addition, planning and excavation activities are underway for the future construction of two new reactors at our Plant Vogtle location.  We currently have opportunities located at our corporate headquarters in Birmingham, AL for a Communications Specialist. This position will help support our Public Relations Department.

 Communications Specialist (Birmingham, AL)

 JOB SUMMARY:

 The Communications Specialist is responsible for developing and implementing internal/external communication strategies for the Southern Nuclear fleet of three operating facilities with a total of six nuclear units; serving as point of contact on various fleet initiatives and business focus areas. The Specialist also is responsible for serving as an official SNC media spokesperson and supporting the SNC Emergency Communications Organization by serving as on-call Emergency Operating Facility news writer.

 JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides excellent communications consultation/client support by developing strategic communications plans/messages and tactical implementation on all company issues including licensing, supply chain, procurement, engineering, operations, etc.
  • Must be an experienced, exceptional writer with ability to develop communication plans and strategies, online stories, key messages, talking points, and press releases while working in a fast-paced environment under tight deadlines.
  • Responds to reporters' inquiries to present the Company's position in an honest, timely and effective manner. 
  • Superior knowledge of how the media works is required.
  •   Ability to interface with officers and managers, as appropriate, in the development and achievement of company goals, including presentation development, communication of key-initiative announcements and special projects.
  • Be thoroughly skilled in diverse messaging including social media, PowerPoint presentations, video scripts, website content, in order to competently recommend best means to communicate targeted messages to specific audiences.  
  • Working knowledge of web content management systems, web development and design.
  • Experience with photo/graphics applications such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, video production/editing a plus.
  • Support annual SNC Leadership Forum planning and site Forum planning and execution.
  • Write for Southern Nuclear, Southern Company and other internal media/intranet sites to promote company efforts.
  • Support Emergency Communications Organization by serving as on-call Emergency Operations Facility News writer and media representative. Participate in plant exercises/drills and continuing training to satisfy procedure guidance, owner company expectations and regulatory requirements.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; be self-directed, creative and innovative.
  • Strong teamwork and project management skills needed. 
  • Must be willing and able to handle multiple tasks in a high-pressure work environment. 

 JOB REQUIREMENTS:

 Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations or communications required.

 Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years direct communications experience.
  • Experience working in the electric utility and nuclear industry is highly desirable
  • Minimum of 5 years experience developing and implementing strategic communication plans
  • Experience in public relations, writing, communications, marketing, media or related field is required (5 years minimum) with demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills and ability to analyze, interpret and effectively communicate complex technical information are necessary for success.
  • Ability to build productive professional relationships with diverse clients to achieve company's communication and business goals.
  • Knowledge of state and national regulatory processes related to the nuclear industry preferred.
  • Strong existing relationships with local and national media preferred.
  • Candidate must be motivated to work in self-directed environment.
  • Candidate must model company behaviors (Unquestionable Trust, Superior Performance, Total Commitment) with strong teamwork skills and demonstrated ability to work with different levels of management and employees.
