Description:

Chemicals Editor

Department: Content
Office: SmartBrief HQ

SmartBrief is seeking a full-time editor to help create our daily and weekly online business and consumer news e-mail publications, primarily for the chemicals industry. Candidates would need to be available to start at 7 a.m. ET, Monday through Friday.

What we're looking for

Someone who is knowledgeable and passionate about the chemicals business, as well as our mission to make people smarter and save them time. The ideal candidate confidently and persuasively exercises news judgment in a deadline-intensive work environment, works creatively in multiple media platforms and is eager to develop new ways to deliver valuable content to our busy readers.

SmartBrief editors review, edit and approve the work of freelancers and/or associate editors. They also may have to write summaries for their briefs. Freelancers will search for relevant media coverage and/or create summaries of that news, as determined by the editor. Management of freelancers may include interaction over instant messenger, e-mail or phone.

This job involves client relationship management, so strong written and oral communications skills are a must. Editors must interact with their newsletter partners a minimum of once per quarter, and sometimes as often as daily. Some partners review their newsletters, which an editor must factor into his/her day. Other partners may have content issues dependent on the time of year or the legislative calendar. All editors are responsible for maintaining partner relationships, in coordination with our senior editors and partner development team.

The ideal candidate would work at our Washington, D.C., office, but highly qualified telecommuters will be considered. Applicants will be required to take a timed writing and editing test.

Job Duties

•      Identify the most important news stories of the day for inclusion in various e-mail newsletters.

•      Edit summaries of aggregated news items for inclusion in SmartBrief's newsletters for grammar, style, tone and appropriateness for each audience.

•      Work closely with partners to ensure they meet their goals for their publications.

•      Occasionally attend industry conferences and events, producing multimedia original content live on site.

•      Manage offsite freelancers.

•      Respond to reader comments and suggestions.

Required Skills & Experience:

·       Proven writing and editing skills. Alternative: Three to five years of experience in a communications or research role with a news organization, consulting firm, trade association or other relevant group.

·       Ability to write and edit quickly and accurately on deadline.

·       Sophisticated understanding of how to find news and information for a particular audience.

·       Facility for using online publishing tools.

·       Strong interpersonal and communications skills.

·       Proven record of taking initiative, sharing responsibilities and managing multiple projects simultaneously.

·       Ability to analyze reader trends and statistics.

The above statements describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position. This is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities and duties required of an editor.
