Award-winning International Media Org Seeks Editor for Africa Desk

Global Press Institute (GPI) is an award-winning, high-impact social venture that uses journalism as a development tool to educate, employ and empower women in the developing world to produce high-quality local news coverage that elevates global awareness and ignites social change.

GPI is building a network of professional women journalists throughout the developing world who earn a fair wage for reporting on their local communities. Their unique coverage of issues overlooked by mainstream media contributes directly to the development and empowerment of their communities, brings greater transparency to their countries, and changes the way the world views their people and cultures.

GPI offers women around the world a unique training-to-employment opportunity that builds the skills necessary for success in professional journalism and then provides them with long-term employment. Each woman who completes the training program receives a job offer at a fair wage to become a GPI reporter. To date, GPI has trained and employed more than 130 women in 26 countries around the world.

GPI HQ in San Francisco is hiring an experienced editor to lead its Africa Desk. The Editor of the GPI Africa Desk will work with GPI reporters and editors across 13 countries in Africa to fact check and copy edit feature news stories for publication on GPI’s online news platform. The editor is responsible for managing workflow, assigning deadlines, providing educational feedback on all stories and tracking reporter development. International travel to provide training to GPI reporters around the world will be required.

The successful candidate must have a minimum of 3-5 years of professional editing experience and a Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or English. An expert knowledge of AP Style and grammar are essential. A love of feature stories and a deep understanding of story development, organization and balanced sourcing are a must. Impeccable written and oral communication skills are a must.

Above all, the Editor must exude positivity and a passion for GPI’s mission to utilize journalism as a development tool. He/she must be a productive, self-motivated, team player who prizes ethics and demonstrates mature reasoning and judgment. The successful candidate will possess the ability to balance multiple priorities, meet deadlines and thrive in a dynamic environment. Our  diverse body of reporters requires an editor who can also teach with empathy and patience.

Global Press Institute is in a high-impact growth period. The team at GPI HQ is comprised of hyper-communicative, passionate professionals. We are looking for a thought partner and a fellow leader to help us build new systems and continue our tradition of educational and journalistic excellence.  A desire to bring innovation to the field of journalism is mandatory to become part of our team.

Preference will be given to candidates with previous international experience, preferably in Africa. Candidates with French, Arabic or other relevant language skills are encouraged to apply. Candidates based in the Bay Area are strongly preferred.

Finalists will be asked to take an editing test, edit a sample story and participate in a video meeting with a GPI News Desk in Africa.

Applicants should email a resume and cover letter detailing past experience and interest in GPI’s mission to opportunities@globalpressinstitute.orgby January 15, 2013.
