The Hawaii Tribune-Herald, a 17,000-circulation daily newspaper located in Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii, has an immediate opening for a talented associate editor.

This is a full-time management position that serves as the No. 2 editor in the newsroom.

The associate editor is responsible for managing the copy desk and all production-related workflow in the newsroom and is the primary editor for most staff-written stories.

Ideal applicant for this position is: an experienced, organized leader with excellent page-design, copy-editing and headline-writing skills; an effective manager of time, people and content resources; a champion for quality control; calm and cool under deadline pressure; fast and reliable.

Duties include: designing, paginating and editing newspaper pages as needed; line-editing and proofreading staff-written stories on a daily basis; assembling/coordinating special sections; helping push content to digital platforms, including social media, mobile and web; communicating with customers and freelancers regarding content; assisting the editor in scheduling and tracking work assignments; assisting in overall management of the newsroom.

Requirements: at least three years of full-time page design/copy editing experience at a daily newspaper (not including college newspapers); proficiency with InDesign and Photoshop; solid news judgment; experience building editorial products from start to finish; outstanding communication skills and attention to detail; a two year-commitment.

Journalism degree preferred; photography/video skills a plus.
