Company: The Dickinson Press
Position:
Regional Reporter needed in the Bakken
Location:
Dickinson, North Dakota
Job Status:  Full-time
Salary:  Negotiable
Website: http://www.thedickinsonpress.com

Description:

The Dickinson Press has an immediate opening for a Regional Reporter to cover one of the fastest-growing areas in the nation.

The Press is a six-day morning newspaper (no Monday edition) with a 7,200 print circulation and a growing Web base that serves the country’s third fastest-growing micropolitan area and the city livability.com recently named the No. 1 small town in America.

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter able to produce a strong balance of straightforward reporting with features and enterprise stories, develop a social media base and help institute any other new ideas he or she may have. The reporter's beats will include western North Dakota's agriculture and energy industries (with special emphasis on the politics of both), outdoors and conservation, as well as reporting on the smaller towns in our coverage area, all of which generate an abundance of news in the midst of the Bakken oil boom.

Page design experience is not required but is helpful as the reporter will be asked to design a minimum of one page per week, often featuring their own articles. Our reporters also take their own photographs with DSLR cameras and lenses provided by the newspaper, and have the option to shoot video for their stories with their own cameras or those provided by the newspaper.

The Dickinson Press won the North Dakota Newspaper Association’s 2012 General Excellence and 2012 and 2013 Sweepstakes awards in its circulation category.

This is an excellent position for a young reporter or recent college graduate looking to gain valuable experience at a small-town daily newspaper where days are decidedly fast-paced. Many of our recent reporters have moved on to larger newspapers or to higher positions within Forum Communications Co., which owns The Dickinson Press and several other newspapers in the upper Midwest.

Applicants must:

–      Have a journalism degree, or similar, from a four-year college.

–      Have one year of journalism experience at daily newspaper. Recent journalism school graduates with internship, daily newspaper or college newspaper experience are encouraged to apply.

–      Be able to cover breaking news and write under tight deadlines, and do so in proper AP style.

–      Be able to report on stories and write features for an array of topics.

–      Have strong decision-making, communication and interpersonal skills.

–      Be a motivated, self-starter who can produce award-winning ideas.

–      Have a valid driver’s license, a driving record that is insurable by the company and a reliable source of transportation.

Please send a cover letter, resume and no more than five writing clips, as well as any samples of page design and photography, and three professional references to Managing Editor Dustin Monke at dmonke@thedickinsonpress.com no later than Aug. 15.
