The Pulitzer Prize winning Point Reyes Light newspaper is seeking reporting interns. The Point Reyes Light is located in Marin County, California, an hour from San Francisco amid redwood trees and ocean. The Light covers 14 small towns which are filled with eccentrics, farmers, aging hippies and locavores, many of whom have graduate degrees. The local bookstore is stocked with the New York Review of Books and the Economist. Literary reporting inters act as full time reporters. They receive one large and one or two small assignments on Thursday, which are due Tuesday, and subject to a full day or editing and rewriting. It is a full time internship and lasts four months and is unpaid. Interns are paid in experience and clips, many of which earn California and national awards every year. The Point Reyes Light is perhaps the most famous small newspaper in the United States, if not the world. Our goal is to create stories that are literary, which means that they exceed the genre of journalism and become reportage. Scene pieces should be written like a Talk Of The Town story. Pieces dense with information should be written like a story in the Economist, and with the same wit and verve. Profiles should give the same sense of character as a profile in the New Yorker. Some view this as hubris, and there has been a great deal of attention drawn to our style. You may want to review some of the articles written about the Light in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times and the Columbia Journalism Review and decide if the Light is the right paper for your aspirations.
