Interested in a career in marine science?

Looking to bolster your CV with valuable research skills and research experience?

HAMER is offering undergraduate or recent graduate students pursuing a career in marine biology, an internship opportunity to work on a research project to help protect Hawaii``s largest marine resident, the manta ray. While diving alongside these majestic mantas, interns will work closely with a University of Hawaii Ph.D. student to learn valuable research techniques used in data collection and analysis.

These graceful giants are currently unprotected in Hawaii and face serious threats from direct and indirect fishing, aquarium collection, and irresponsible commercial diver operators. This much needed research will contribute to the ongoing efforts to understand and protect Maui``s resident manta ray population.

During your three-week stay in Maui you will:

1) Dive alongside Hawaii``s largest resident marine species, the manta ray 2) Participate in ongoing manta ray and marine mammal research 3) Receive training, practical experience, and lectures to help develop your skills as a field biologist

Interns will learn valuable research skills such as:

1)Photo-identification of manta rays and marine mammals as a tool for developing individual life histories, population densities, site fidelity, and behavior 2) Paired-laser photogrammetry for measuring the body size of animals in the field 3) Line-transect survey methods used for reef habitat monitoring 4) Additional research tools such as tissue sampling for population genetics and stable-isotope analysis 5) Managing databases using Microsoft Access 6) Using bibliography software such as Endnote for literature searches and papers 7) Website development and management 8) Small boat operation, safety, and maintenance

Cost: 21 days ($1,999) or 45 days ($2,999)

Cost includes:

Housing during your stay on Maui 1) Food stipend 2) Research dives 3) All tanks and weights (full dive gear can be provided for an additional fee) 4) Small boat work 5) All training and lectures *cost does not include travel to and from Maui

Preference will be given to applicants:

1) with a minimum of two-years of college in a science program 2) with an `advanced` level dive certification or higher 3) who are in good physical condition and capable of lifting 50 lbs 4) a commitment to pursing a career in marine science 5) prior experience with photo-identification and line transect surveys

**due to the highly physical and academic nature of the internship, not all applicants will be eligible
