Investor``s Business Daily EDITORIAL APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM

About the program:

The Investor’s Business Daily six-month apprenticeship is designed for beginning journalists who are looking to launch their careers in a daily newspaper setting. This is an ideal opportunity for any journalist with an interest in business, economics, stocks and the overall investment field.

What will you do?

Sitting just 10 feet away from the Senior Editors, you will work with other journalists on IBD’s news desk. This team of reporters and editors monitor all the breaking business and economic news. They select the items of greatest interest to investors and business readers and prepare a concise, comprehensive news summary by deadline each day. You also will write business features and trend stories, probably three or four a month. Over the six months, you will develop business news judgment. You’ll learn how to analyze the stock market and quickly decipher company financials. You will exchange ideas and share information with other staff in our team-oriented environment. This position is located in our Los Angeles headquarters.

What is the working environment like?

IBD journalists work in an open newsroom with no walls or private offices. The atmosphere is friendly and the newsroom managers are very accessible. The Assistant News Editor will provide informal training and mentoring. Everyone is very resourceful and eager to lend a helping hand.

How will your progress and growth be measured?

You will work with a mentor who can provide guidance and continual feedback. Areas needing improvement will be addressed with resourceful tools and solutions. After 90 days, you will meet with the Managing Editor to review your progress, as half of the program will be complete. At the end of the six-month term, you will meet with the Managing Editor again to evaluate your performance and determine if a full-time position can be offered.

What is the compensation? Are there any relocation costs covered?

You will be paid $865.00 a week without benefits. A $2,000 relocation stipend may be offered at your 90-day review if you qualify.

Who is eligible to apply?

The apprenticeship is open to college graduates who have been out of school for no longer than six months, or seniors who will graduate before the apprenticeship starts. A degree in business, economics or journalism is helpful. Applicants without a journalism or similar degree must have taken journalism courses or have prior “real world” experience. This would include internships or other writing or editing work at publications on or off campus, news wires or Web sites.

How do I apply?

Submit your resume, cover letter, three professional references and at least six clips. Absolutely no links to clips will be accepted.

What are the deadlines?

We accept applications year round. We hire two apprentices a year. One begins on July 1, and one on January 1. The deadline to apply for the July 1 start date is April 2. The deadline for the January 1 start date is October 1.
