Organization
The Dalles Chronicle is a small daily newspaper (circulation 5,500), publishing Tuesday through Friday and Sunday. It is located within the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic area, an outdoor-lovers' mecca featuring world-class recreation opportunities. It news staff ranges in experience from two years to decades in the field.
Student Learning
The Dalles Chronicle is looking for creative, intelligent interns with a good work ethic for three available summer internships, two in reporting and one in photography. Emphasis is on building a portfolio and skills growth. Interns work alongside experienced reporters who provide mentorship and insight into the profession of journalism. Work produced during the internship has the potential to be published alongside that of experienced reporters, helping the intern build professional-quality clips.
Essential qualifications
Candidates should be college juniors or above pursuing careers in one of the following: journalism, communications or English. Strong writing, proofreading and interviewing skills are required. Candidate should be able to gather information effectively from a variety of sources. Attentiveness to deadline is a requirement. Successful candidates will be detail-oriented, flexible, organized and able to complete assignments. Candidates should have college-level journalism experience. Photography and page design (Quark XPress) are a plus.
Compensation
While The Chronicle doesn't pay an hourly wage, it offers a $100 per month stipend for basic expenses, as well as work mileage and authorized expenses.
