MarylandReporter.com seeks an intern to help with coverage of the 2010 Maryland General Assembly session, which runs from January to April. The startup Web site is run by veteran Maryland journalists, and is being rolled out in October with the goal of stemming the decline in state government coverage in Maryland. The position will be based out of our Annapolis office in the State House.

Job responsibilities largely center on reporting for the site. An intern will be expected to find original stories and write them quickly, accurately and fairly. The position also involves assisting staff in pulling together an assortment of relevant links to news about Maryland politics and government, as well as helping put together daily e-mail blasts. Some early morning hours may be necessary.

This internship presents an opportunity for a student to learn the workings of a new news organization with a different, nonprofit business model that is becoming one of the options for new media. Web savvy is crucial, and the supervisors will listen to and respect the intern’s suggestions about the site. It is a great resume booster, which offers experience working on the Web while doing serious, hard-hitting journalism. While we will be hiring soon for this spring position, please feel free to contact us regarding internships for next summer and beyond as we ramp up election coverage in Maryland. We may also have some smaller, short-term writing projects available. Check out www.marylandreporter.com to see our coverage of Maryland politics and government coming soon, and to subscribe to our e-blasts to get an idea of our interests and needs.
